Welcome To Our Site!
Fannie Lou Hamer’s America is a new and original documentary told through the public speeches, personal interviews, and powerful songs of the fearless Mississippi sharecropper-turned-human-rights-activist. Known for being “sick and tired of being sick and tired” and her impassioned pleas for equal rights, Fannie Lou Hamer helped change laws and was very influential in the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Besides her political advocacies during the 1960s, Hamer was also a humanitarian, providing clothing, housing, educational opportunities for the poor, and food for thousands through her Freedom Farm Cooperative and Pig Bank.
Through this educational site, created and maintained by Hamer’s family, and the foremost Fannie Lou Hamer historians, authors and scholars, you’ll see and hear Fannie Lou Hamer as you never have before!

Among the many individuals who helped define the civil rights movement, Fannie Lou Hamer occupies a very unique place. Despite having a sixth-grade education, no other woman of that time was more vocal, visible or in demand as a public speaker than she was. One of her primary pedagogical legacies was enabling students in the Mississippi Delta to become the next generation of speakers and leaders.
We help them accomplish that through our Sunflower County Film Academy. This free, summer workshop introduces high school students to the Digital Arts & Media fields. Using professional-grade production equipment, they learn how to make their own short films and documentary projects while researching their family history. We give them a creative outlet and prepare them for career opportunities in filmmaking, editing, broadcasting and more!
This educational website will continue to add research materials, photographs and documents as they become available. And you can support our efforts as well as our upcoming Digital Library and Museum on this website dedicated entirely to Fannie Lou Hamer!
