MONIFF 10th Anniversary Film Festival Features Fannie Lou Hamer’s America

OCT. 11, 2022 - KEENE, NEW HAMPSHIRE

Fannie Lou Hamer’s America, a film told entirely in the voice of civil rights activist and humanitarian Fannie Lou Hamer, was chosen as an official selection at the 10th annual Monadnock International Film Festival (MONIFF).

The event was held September 23 - October 6, 2022 and followed a hybrid format. Audiences attended in-person screenings at the Showroom, a Colonial Performing Arts Center venue in Keene, New Hampshire, from Friday, September 23 through Sunday, September 25.

“We are very excited that many filmmakers attended MONIFF this year. It was a great way to celebrate our 10th anniversary. Local stories were a major highlight of the festival, and filmgoers delighted in the eight post-screening discussions/Q&As that took place at the Showroom,” said Deirdre Fitzgerald, chair of the MONIFF board of directors.

On Tuesday, September 27, filmgoers also enjoyed virtual in-home screenings, including Fannie Lou Hamer’s America, via the Festival’s streaming platform.

"MONIFF was proud to include Fannie Lou Hamer’s America in our festival lineup for 2022. Until this film, I was among those that had not heard of Fannie Lou Hamer and her incredible fight for racial justice,” Fitzgerald said. “As we continue to confront hard truths about how far civil rights have progressed for black Americans, Fannie Lou Hamer's story shows a woman who was central as an organizer in the movement and ensured her story is not erased from history."

This year’s program included over 35 feature films and 30 shorts and showcased cinema from countries including France, Denmark, Taiwan, United Kingdom, India, Ukraine, Senegal, United States, and Ireland. The Showroom in Keene hosted 13 titles and three shorts blocks with several films featuring the talent of New Hampshire and regional filmmakers.
